Sandfire Road House- 5883kms in the Bank
We were looking forward to getting back on the road today. However it was a slightly slower start than expected. The Loveliness did absolutely nothing when I turned the key this morning. It certainly leaves one cold when her dulcet tones don’t kick in at all.
The Workshop Foreman, was straight onto it. With the body up checking everything using a process of elimination.
It turns out her ignition is a bit sloppy and it takes a bit of jiggling each time, with the key to get her to kick over.
Our support crew in Yandina, Col and Viv, are going to send a new ignition switch to Perth, for when we get there next Thursday. The Workshop Foreman will fit it when we arrive.
We still rolled out of Broome at 8.06 hours.
Our first stop was Roebuck Road house.
It was the usual chaos outside at the bowsers. Luckily we did not need much fuel as the 98 ran out when we reached the pump. I think the Harley got 3 litres and the Loveliness got 2litres.
The refuelling truck arrived, 10 caravans and a road train. I actually held the MOTHs hand to get back to my trike, as I was actually in fear of getting run over.
It’s a 300km run then to Sandfire Road house, our stop for the night.
It is still owned by the same family that opened it up in 1970, Eddie and Kathleen Norton. Eddie worked for the main roads. He often rescued motorists that had come to grief on the long lonely stretch between Broome and Port Hedland. It has survived many cyclones and even returned after it was burnt to the ground in 2007.
We have an unpowered site in a mango plantation. The shade is beautiful and the MOTH had a bit of a Kip after lunch in the camper in the shade. All our devices are charging on various battery packs.
Only $ 25.00 for the night.
There is a whole lot of not very much out here, but the road is long and straight and makes for easy riding.
We stopped for a quick drink of water and found an electric car charging station.
Not an electric car insight in the last 5000km. However you can see the generator in the background ! A conundrum indeed. Fossil fuel to provide an alternative to fossil fuel. To vehicles that are not really able to make it all the way out here. Maybe I am missing something in the bigger picture.
We have had a lovely dinner at the roadhouse!
We have also had a blow out today!
Thankfully it was only the MOTHs jeans. I was quite disappointed as they have only made it 5800kms into the trip. However he pointed out they are 8 years old and have ridden to South Australia and Cooktown already. We heard a great quote from Kerry Parke, “ the bike was so packed up there was not even room for a fart”.
Well it looked like that may have been the case on the Harley today.
So his going out jeans will become his riding jeans and we will have to buy new going out jeans. He still has his leather pants as well, as long as he does not get into any more Boab trees.
As you ride out to find the way, the way will appear,
Until next time.
