First Stop Larrimah

After leaving Daly Waters, just 88km down the road we stopped in the little town of Larrimah. It has shot to a notorious type of fame after a Netflix documentary “ Last Stop Larrimah”, on the disappearance of Paddy Moriarty and his dog Kellie on December 16, 2017. It was our first stop of the day, hence the heading for this episode.

No body has ever been found. Several theories abound, including being cooked into the famous (apparently famous) Frans pies. The documentary by the ABC is captivating as it contains footage collected several years prior to the death of Mr Moriarty. In this footage the interviews appear to reveal several undercurrents of malcontent. Mr Moriaty also appears in these interviews. If you have not seen it, its worth watching in a weird macabre way.

Yes, the MOTH and John, had to have a pie, and we all got out alive. It was weird, there did not seem to be any locals around at all. I think only about 6 people live there and it was only about 0930hrs, so understandable, I guess…….

It turns out there is alot more to Larrimah. It was an important Railway siding as an ambitious upgrading of the north-south track began in 1940. Larrimah rapidly developed as a military town providing a transfer point for personnel and stores from the south to Darwin and military centers in the region. The railway facilities increased with two sidings constructed, one for fuel and a second for passengers and freight.
