Hahndorf-13 000kms

Dearest Intrepid Reader,

Quick easy ride through the capital of South Australia, Adelaide, then up into Hahndorf.

Well, there may have been a few wild moments in the city as we navigated a few trams. We ended up separated but all arrived in Hahndorf within a few minutes of each other.

The MOTH and I visited Hahndorf about 32 years ago when I had to come down to Adelaide for a residential placement at Flinders University.

It is an historic town and was zoned as a state heritage area in 1988, by the government of South Australia, and acknowledged as Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement.

The Village dates back to 1839. During World War One, anti German sentiments seen the town renamed Ambleside. It reverted back to Hahndorf in 1935 as part of South Australia’s Centenary Celebrations.

The German Arms Hotel became known as the Ambleside Inn and did not revert back to its original name until 1976. We had lunch there today.

Prost!

Jenny and I had a lovely time shopping in all the little craft and specialty boutique shops.

Had to fill this space in front of the fire!

We have a Chalet as our home for tonight, at the back of the Old Mill Hotel that dates back to 1851. The first steam powered flour mill was erected on this site.

We passed by the town of Lochiel, about 125kms north of Adelaide. It is known for the “ pink lake” Lake Bumbunga. It is pink due to a certain algae.

The play on the towns name has led to the placement of two Loch Eel monsters in the Lake, long ago in the 1970s, which can be seen as you ride by on the Augusta Highway.

They also feature on the towns sign, as does a horse pulling a salt scraper.

The lake has been used for salt mining since 1881. With the harvesting of salt becoming practicable with only front end loaders, the maintenance and salt works buildings became redundant and were demolished in 2000.

Singers, actors and tourists flock to the lake to use it as a backdrop in their photos.

Always, something to see. So many stories and so much history. And a monster.

As you ride out to find the way,

The way will appear!

Until next time,

MOTH and LOL

These boots from Hahndorf were absolutely necessary for me to have to complete the lap, and in an amazing happenstance, they match the Lovliness!
