Lakes Entrance VIC - 14 508 kms

Dearest Intrepid Reader,

We left Torquay early, as is usual for our little group. It was quite cool and just a little bit of fog.

We passed through Barwon Heads, which is still the centre, of some TV Series, induced tourism. It was the area used for the Series, Sea Change staring Sigrid Thornton.

Then in our quest to stay as close to the coastline as possible we rode up to Queenscliff to cross Port Phillip bay on the Ferry.

Queenscliff is a seaside town filled with Victorian era buildings. They are majestic and full of old world charm. The town was named in honour of Queen Victoria in 1853 by Lieutenant Charles La Trobe.

We had purchased our tickets on line. They are cheaper that way but it still cost $59.00 per trike one way.

We went on the small ferry today.

We lined up with everyone else and then, in a moment, when all seemed to be right with the world, Rubilicious and the Lovliness were summoned out of the line up, to ride on to the Ferry, named Peninsula Princess, first.

We were instructed to go to each corner of the ferry, after they made sure we had a reverse gear.

It is 10kms accross the Bay to Sorrento on the Ferry.

On the Ferry are posters of what to look out for during your time on Port Phillip Bay. The crossing takes about 40minutes.

We did see a couple of seals in the distance.

Community of the Road

During our time waiting on the line up to board and then on the Ferry, people were very keen to have a chat about what we were doing and our rides. Jenny had a whole group around her at one stage. It was like she had a tour group.

The fellow talking to the MOTH and I in the photo below, confided in us that he had a fat boy at home he was thinking of selling, but after meeting us he was going to get out and ride it. How wonderful!

We asked several locals why they were on the Ferry? As we wondered about the cost of taking it frequently. They shared that there was a discount for locals and for frequent travel and seniors. They said that it was often quicker to take the ferry and far less stressful than being in the traffic.

After disembarking at Sorrento, we had a lovely brunch at Rusty’s and then headed down the Princess Highway, through the Gippsland to Lakes Entrance.

We are here for just one night. It will be our last night in Victoria.

The last 30kms of our ride today I am sure the wind was coming straight off the snow. It just got colder and colder despite the two layers on my legs and the 6 layers on my chest and heated apparel.

I could actually feel my body fat being used up to try and keep my body temperature above a hypothermic level.

Somehow, I managed to get off the trike, when we arrived.

We have had a lovely meal as we discuss the highlights of our day and plan for tomorrow. The flat map comes out and John and the MOTH study Google maps and discuss the benefits of different routes. Jenny and I listen attentively, wishing we actually knew where they were talking about.

“Way Finding”, is a big part of a trip such as this lap.

Not just on the road. Finding accommodation, finding the fuel pumps, finding grocery shops, and what ever else you may need, in places you have never been.

It takes commitment, effort, good decision making and teamwork to make it happen day after day.

It is work, however it’s also fun, but whatever it is, it must be done.

When you ride out to find the way,

The way will appear.

Until Next time
