Dearest Intrepid Reader,
Well it feels wonderful to have the first 1000kms done.
We rode out from Calliope this morning after a coffee and a bit of a send off from our tribe at Coffee Ink. We have such a supportive extended group of friends from Ulysses and United Trikers.
Jenny was up the front today and we rode out under clear blue skies. I had 4 layers on as the cold wind was lazy and trying to blow straight through us.
Our first stop mainly just for fuel was a Marlborough.
Just near Camilla or about 65 kms south of Sarina we pulled into a little wayside place for lunch.
Flaggy Rock Cafe, a gourmet food stop. It was unexpected as the sign says. It was a family affair with even the young teenagers in the kitchen and taking the orders and the food was indeed gourmet. The service was quick.
There is lots of quirky pieces of art and the building is completed on the outside with flitches, giving it an appealing rustic look. Flitches are the slab of timber cut from the outside of a tree trunk, so one side has the rounded edge. I only learnt the proper name for them, the other day at our friends Cols and Viv’s. Col built a shed with them 40 years ago, but it looks much older due to the use of flitches.

As we rode into Sarina, the deeper shade of green, in the grass and the foliage, that is a sign of North Queensland started to be evident.
We have se up Camp tonight in our little Camper and Jenny and John are in their tent. Just as we finished setting up we had a shower of rain. We are staying at the Andergrove Van Park and had a hearty meal at the local Bowls club.
Mackay is the Centre of Australia’s sugar industry and site of a sugar research institute(1953).
There will be no shenanigans in the camp tonight, hot showers and into bed.
